Red Dresses For A Wedding

I have had a few questions about whether guests can wear a red dress to a wedding. I appreciate the caution, after all–red can be one of the brighter, and more alarming colors; and primary rule of dressing for a wedding is to not detract from the bride.  That said, I really think there are plenty of red dresses seen at weddings ; in fact  3 of the dresses I wore as a bridesmaid were this color, and it is seen as a color of good luck in many cultures. I also think as long as the cut is fairly conservative,  and the dress fits the season, time of day, and the wearer, a red dress can be a wonderful color to wear – after all, if we stay away from every bright hue, wedding attire will start to look like very drab funeral attire.

So at the risk of offending more conservative tastes than mine, I think red is fine to wear, especially if it is a deep red. Only if you know the entire wedding is very light and pastel-themed, and you’re specifically requested not to wear red. I’d also like to say, that based on what I read on some message boards, I do think the idea of offending the bride with clothing choices is starting to go too far. In my experience, no matter what happens the bride is always the center of the day, and usually horrendous behavior takes away from the day, a guest’s clothing does not.  So wear red if you’d like to and show that you wish nothing but good cheer for the couple.
